In year 1 we had an amazing time designing and making our very own cars. The children had to decide which type of wheel and axle to use. They then decorated them to make them look even better.

Year 1 are looking at non-standard and some standard units of measurement including mass/weight. The children had to make estimations before identifying the heaviest object. They understand that the biggest object isn’t always the heaviest.

In Year 1 we were looking at materials and the different textures that they have. The children enjoyed drawing and cutting around their hands before glueing a different texture on each finger. Next week the children will be writing a word on each finger which best describes the texture.

Year 1 did amazingly well at identifying the properties of common 2D and some 3D shapes. All of the children now understand that the pointy bits are called corners.

Year 1 had a great time looking for 3D shapes in the classroom. Some of the children even started to identify the properties of these shapes.

For the past year I have been helping to raise money for a poorly young boy called Layton. At the end of last week I explained to year 1 that I wanted them to make some Christmas cards for a very special boy. They were really excited and could not wait to draw some fabulous super hero designs (Layton’s favourite). I am sure that these cards will put a huge smile on Layton’s face.

In English we have been reading a book called The Bear in the Cave. Year 1 had a great time making shapes and sounds of the different scenes from the story. Examples of what the bear can see and hear include trains, traffic and tall buildings.

Year 1 have been working on ordinal numbers in maths. The children successfully lined up in order using ordinal numbers.

Year 1 had a brilliant time feeling and tasting different fruits and vegetables as part of our DT healthy eating topic. They then had to describe them using wonderful adjectives.

We went outside to see how many different shapes we could find. I set the children mini challenges to find specific shapes. As you can see from the hexagon they found, year 1 did not disappoint.
